Running Into Your Later Years

By Bob Crook

Ramasastry Satyaprasad, or Ram, as he is better known to his many friends, began running in 1987 on the advice of his doctor to get more exercise. With a demanding work schedule, he found that running was the most convenient way to add exercise to his life.

That was 32 years ago. Now at age 81 Ram has run 32 marathons, countless shorter runs, many distance relay events and is the co-founder of the popular Shamrock Running Club based in Woburn. Ram said, “Over the years I have found that running has provided great therapy for both mind and body.”

“Running with other 80-year-old teammates is inspirational to me and has given me an opportunity to have a positive outlook on life.” Ram is the current US Track and Field Federation’s national club record holder for 80+ year-olds in the 400, 800 and 1600 meter relays.

As accomplished as Ram is as an athlete, it is the social aspects and benefits of the running community that have enriched his life in many ways. “Running in a group, one comes across some great people. These great and caring individuals can be helpful in many ways. I have found that runners are great athletes who are always ready to help others.”

It was wonderful to catch up with Ram today. We’ve been friends for 10 years and he’s quite a guy! Be sure to say hello to him when you see him at the Jack’s Abby United Way 5K on Saturday, October 12. Ram will once again be running to support the good work of Call2Talk
